Home

She is perched upon the bridge's railing
Staring at the muddy water below
Wondering if she should take a step back
Or maybe it'd be best to just let go

How had she managed to get herself here
Confused, she remembered only one thing
How they had enjoyed their brutality
And their faces as she ran from the scene

It wasn't right for them to abuse her
Use her like an object that can not feel
Or treat her like she was trash from the streets
To be stepped on and then discarded at will

Somehow she had thought that she belonged here
With people she believed were her friends
But even drugs couldn't make her believe
That theirs' was the way her life was to end

Friends shouldn't make you feel so worthless
At least she could remember that truth
She was raised in a loving family
So how could this self-hate have taken root

She really thought that she was surviving
Not seeing death each time the needle struck home
How could she have traded her life for this
And given up all the love she had known

How could she have thought that they cared for her
that they would keep her safe from any harm
When all that they wanted was so selfish
their needs and desires their only concern

Another's love should not make your heart bleed
Though your own heart can sometimes feel great pain
A lesson so harsh to learn when you're young
And knowledge too devastatingly gained

Warm, silent tears now running down her face
She just can not live this life anymore
She closes her eyes and prepares for the fall
But a hand on her shoulder closes that door

She knew she had felt a firm, strong pressure
But there was no one there that she could see
The few seconds were enough to stop her
And made her re-evaluate her needs

"Home" was the word that kept coming to mind
And she knew she must find her way there
She could not recall the reasons she'd left
But knew love and safety would meet her there

"Home", she could see the picture in her mind
With all the people that loved her from birth
Laughing and crying and letting her know
Just how very much they think she is worth
