I Knew the Day Was Coming

For years we’ve been very good friends
And I’ve deeply cherished our time
Exceptional or sometimes mundane
Each day was important in my life

I knew the day was coming soon
You’ve been warning me for so long
But I just could not face the thought
‘Cause you see I’m not so very strong

I know it’s only selfishness
That is making me feel so sad
‘Cause you are where you need to be
No pain or suffering to be had

Selfish or no, it is what I feel
And I will for a very long time
Because no one has ever taught me
How to cope with a loss of this kind

I know I’ll miss you every day
And also for a very long time
For you are not only in my heart
All the memories are in my mind
