Love

I don’t know how we got to this place
It isn’t what I ever dreamed of
I thought you were the mate of my dreams
But I don’t think you really know love

Love can’t be everlasting fireworks
It would quickly burn out, were that true
With lasting love there must be respect
From each other to carry it through

Love is a gift that needs to be shared
If you want it to beautifully bloom
A precious pact between two people
Not something too easily consumed

How can there be love with so much hate
That is hidden so deeply inside
An unreasonable need or belief
That just nurtures one’s immature pride

Love isn’t who can fight the hardest
It isn’t who can bring the most pain
It isn’t who does more in the home
Nor who can drive the other insane

Love can never be egocentric
That isn’t the kind of love that lasts
Love works towards a better future
It cannot grow dwelling in the past

Love is selflessness not selfishness
It gives so much more than it would take
Love is a trust that surpasses all
And it exists for each other’s sake
